Sharks Sign 1st Round Pick Wiesblatt to Entry-Level Contract
SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed Center Ozzy Wiesblatt (@ozzywiesblatt) to a standard, entry-level contract. Per club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Ozzy brings speed, playmaking, and offense to the lineup, which makes it difficult to play against a talented skater like him," said Wilson. "His tenacity for the puck paired with his ability to retain possession and drive the offensive side of the game, along with his character on and off the ice, makes him a valuable player for our organization."
Wiesblatt, 18, registered 70 points (25 goals, 45 assists) with a plus-20 rating in 64 games with the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Wiesblatt finished second on the team in assists and points, third in goals, and was sixth in plus/minus.
The forward has recorded 110 points (41 goals, 69 assists) with a plus-51 rating in 129 career games with Prince Albert. He helped Prince Albert to a WHL Championship in 2018-19, his rookie season, recording 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 23 playoff games. He also won a WHL Cup Silver Medal in 2017-18.
Prior to his WHL career, Wiesblatt finished eighth in points across the league scoring 41 points (21 goals, 20 assists) while playing for the Calgary Buffaloes in the U-18 Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) in 2018-17. He concluded his 2016-17 under-16 campaign scoring the most goals in the AEHL with 38 goals in 32 games. He was selected 25th overall by Prince Albert in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.
Internationally, he competed with Canada in the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup winning a silver medal. He registered one assist and 12 penalty minutes in five games.
The five-foot-ten, 183-pound native of Calgary, Alberta, was selected by San Jose in the 2020 NHL Draft (first round, 31st overall).
